The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were born at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The objective was to produce a set of universal goals that meet the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world. The SDGs replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which started a global effort in 2000 to tackle the indignity of poverty.
What are the Sustainable Development Goals ?
Following three years of consultation with all stakeholders – member countries, local authorities, sector private sector and civil society – 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in September 2015 by 193 countries at the United Nations. This program, also called “The Agenda 2030” was created in order to meet the actual challenges for peace, humanity, planet, prosperity, by 2030.

SDG 1: End poverty in all its forms
SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security, improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
SDG 10: Reduce inequality within among countries
SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reserve land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
SDG 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
SDG 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global parternship for sustainable development
How does it work ?
In The Agenda 2030, 17 Goals have been defined, containing an overall of 169 targets that can be monitored through 232 indicators to evaluate the progress of their implementation.
The SDGs and their targets are tools that can be used by any organization around the world, in order to contribute to a more sustainable and better future. These indicators be used as information for businesses through their CSR Reports, Annual Reports or even Integrated Reports to display their involvement, progress and results to reach the SDGs.

SD1: No Poverty
Target 1.1 : By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measures as people living on less than $1.25 a day.
TONTOTON Application: Increase daily incomes of poor waste pickers to eradicate extreme poverty ( $1.25/day ).
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Target 11.6 : By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.
TONTOTON Application : Waste will be regularly collected and will get an adequate final treatment through a co-processing system, generating zero waste.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Target 12.5 : By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
TONTOTON Application : Reduce plastic waste by reusing it in cement plants as an Alternative Fuel and Raw Material.
Target 12.6 : Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.

SDG 14: Life Below Water
Target 14.1: By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
TONTOTON Application : Prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution by collecting ocean bound plastic debris in poor waste management areas in Vietnam.
