GRS, and what the certificate actually proves
The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a Textile Exchange standard. It follows recycled material from the recycler, through every company that handles it, to the finished bag. It verifies three things: that the recycled content is the percentage you were told, that the chain of custody is documented at every step, and that the sites in that chain meet social and environmental criteria.
A scope certificate and a transaction certificate are not the same document, and this is where buyers get caught out. A scope certificate says that a company has been audited and is approved to handle GRS material. It says nothing about your particular order. The document that covers your goods is a transaction certificate (TC), issued against your shipment and naming the quantity and the recycled percentage. Our certificate states this in its own footer: a scope certificate is not proof that the goods delivered are GRS certified.
So if a supplier sends you a scope certificate as proof for your order, that is not proof. Ask for the transaction certificate.

For a GRS claim on a finished bag, every company in the chain holds its own certification, and the transaction certificate is what ties that chain to your shipment.

How it works on an order. Tell us at quotation stage that you need GRS documentation. It has to be planned into the material sourcing, not added afterwards. We confirm the recycled percentage the specification will carry, the material is bought against the certified chain, and the transaction certificate is issued for your shipment and sent with the export documents. If your sustainability or compliance team wants to see our scope certificate before then, it is above.
